Help Belize Today: Disaster Relief Fund for Post-Hurricane Lisa Recovery
15th November 2022, United Nations Headquarters, New York, U.S.A.: On 2nd November 2022, Hurricane Lisa made landfall in Belize, causing extensive damage to the Belize District and significant damage to the Cayo District. The Belize District is home to 94,271 residents who were severely affected.
The Government of Belize is in the process of raising money to support post-Hurricane Lisa recovery, and the support of the international community is desperately needed to help meet the needs of the most vulnerable. The SIDS DOCK Organization and its members are supporting Belize it its efforts and recognize the important role Belize plays in the organization through its Prime Minister, the Honourable John Briceno, Vice President of the sixth session of the Assembly of SIDS DOCK representing the Caribbean region, who is leading the relief efforts.
Your generosity will directly help the people of Belize recover from the devastating impacts of Hurricane Lisa, that pounded the Belize District incessantly and relentlessly for more than two hours, leaving a path of destruction as the hurricane crossed the mainland of Belize, impacting approximately 39 percent of the population. Many are now homeless and financially needy or distressed from the impact of Hurricane Lisa.
Thousands are still in shelters, countrywide, and there has been substantial damage to property. The harsh financial impacts of COVID-19 linger. The advent of inflation as a result of the Russia-Ukraine War is severely felt by the poor in Belize. Consequently, those most affected by the impact of Hurricane Lisa have very limited capacity to cope with the losses they are experiencing.
Your contribution will exclusively help assist with the most pressing relief needs: i) roofing and construction materials; ii) food supplies; iii) hygiene and cleaning supplies; iv) household supplies (including bedding and clothing). At this very preliminary stage, the Government is requesting some US$11 million dollars to meet only immediate needs and to provide basic food, household supplies and construction materials to enable the affected population to have a level of human dignity.
