Johannesburg, South Africa – March 28, 2017: ECREEE once again etches its name as the leading regional sustainable energy promotion agency in Sub Saharan Africa as Mr. Mahama Kappiah, the Executive Director of the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), receives the African Energy Leader of the year award at the 10th Annual Africa Energy Awards.
The Africa Energy Awards, which was launched in 2007 is one of the flagship events under Power and Electricity World Africa conference. The awards recognise and reward industry innovation and outstanding performance, and honour the top energy projects and influencers throughout Africa. It is also widely celebrated as the continent’s premier networking opportunity for Africa’s power and energy movers & shakers.
This year’s 10th Annual Africa Energy Awards was held in the Maslow Hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg which brought together several nominees for five award categories namely: Women in Power Award; African Energy Innovation Award; African Energy Leader of the Year; Premier Energy Project of the Year; and the Small and Medium Energy Company of the Year.
The African Energy Leader of the Year is awarded to an individual that exhibits courage, dedication, vision and judgement that empowers those around him/her. He/she must be a leader that is highly respected and recognised by his peers and competitors. Judges were looking for an individual that brings the “X” factor to impact at a company level and within the industry as a whole. Other criteria for selection were strategic vision, achievements, operations, innovation, financials, integrity and leadership.
Other nominees for this category were Gerrie Bronkhorst, General Manager of Eskom – Clean Technologies, Group Capital in South Africa and Bartholomew Simiyu who is the Director of Energy Projects of Camco Clean Energy in Kenya. However the night belonged to Mr. Mahama Kappiah who was awarded the African Energy Leader of the year award at the 10th Annual Africa Energy Awards.
