Tongan turmeric powder headed to Austria! Island Women target $55 billion global botanical and herbal market

1st July 2024, Belmopan, Belize: Ms. Christine Feilinger, Head of International Development, Development Cooperation Section, Austrian Ministry for European and International Affairs, who delivered remarks on how Austria can support the IWON Pilot Initiative for the Development of a Global Sustainable Botanical/Herbal Supplier Market from SIDS, at the third meeting of the Island Women Open Network (IWON) Committee, held on 28th May 2024, in the margins of the Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4) in Antigua and Barbuda, from 27-30 May 2024, was presented with a sample of premium Tongan turmeric powder.

Not only does turmeric give mustard and curry their vibrant colouring, but in most SIDS culture, it is also well-known for having anti-inflammatory properties that benefit your health and its antioxidant properties can help protect the skin. Ms. Feilinger said she will be taking her sample home to Austria with her, armed with information on its various uses. She said she was looking forward to seeing the project in Tonga progress and was confident that the pilot project will be a success. In the background of the photo is Mr. Solomone Fifita, Manager, Pacific Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PCREEE) and SIDS DOCK Pacific Regional Coordinator, Pacific Community [Representing the UNIDO Global Network of Regional Sustainable Energy Centers – GN-SECs].
